The metaverse is emerging as a revolutionary digital ecosystem that integrates blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality (XR), and Web 3.0 technologies to revolutionize business operations, governance, and socioeconomic interactions. This paper provides an in-depth review of recent literature to investigate the essential function of governance, trust and sustainability in enabling secure and resilient metaverse-based virtual economies. The study investigates decentralized governance mechanisms, blockchain-driven transparency, digital identities, reputation mechanisms, and sustainable economic frameworks that enhance user trust and long-term ecosystem resilience. The review underscores meaningful opportunities in digital entrepreneurship, decentralized commerce, cross-platform collaboration and inclusive economic participation, but also serious challenges including regulatory fragmentation, cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, environmental sustainability and interoperability limitations. The results point to the necessity of robust governance frameworks that incorporate decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), intelligent contracts, explicit regulatory policies, and ethical AI to strike a balance between innovation and responsibility. Furthermore, sustainable virtual economies need inclusive participation, energy-efficient blockchain infrastructures and internationally harmonized standards that enable secure digital transactions and consumer protection. Governance, trust and sustainability are interdependent pillars that will determine long-term success and global adoption of metaverse ecosystems, the study concludes. Future research should focus on the empirical validation of governance models, standardized regulations, and sustainable digital infrastructures that can support equitable and resilient virtual economies.
